Easy listening, easy life

Simply press one button to start your in-phone music player and there’s a selection of top hits preloaded to get you started. It couldn’t be easier!

The W800i fits the mold of other Sony Ericsson products–design is a big focus. Spec wise the phone is based off the K750i, just tuned with some different software and slightly different design (specifically the keys and the back face, size and shape of the handsets are nearly identical). I had several friends ask if the W800i was available through Cingular, because the orange color of the handset makes it look like a heavily Cingular branded device. It’s not, and since the phone lacks GSM 850 the W800i will never make it to Cingular.

The specification of the W800i is the same as the K750i, except that the W800i is customised for music. There’s a one-touch music button for controlling the MP3 player, plus extra bundled software for ripping audio tracks from CDs. The W800i also comes with a larger memory stick for storing all those songs - 512 Mbytes may not sound a lot when compared with an iPod (or even an iPod Mini), but it’s pretty large for a phone, and is enough for around 150 audio tracks. The memory stick is expandable to 1 Gbyte. A quality headset is included in the sales package, and the W800i can also be connected to an external speaker system via an optional cable.

The prominent Walkman branding on the W800i’s smooth white and orange casing reveals the handset’s strong focus on music playback capabilities from a mile away. In fact, when powering on the handset, users must choose whether to use the W800i as a combination of mobile phone and music player, or as a stand-alone music player. Having the same hardware as the K750i, audio quality has been upped significantly as compared to handsets of yore, and given the good quality of its bundled earphones, the W800i as a music player would have no problems competing with many existing portable audio players out-of-the-box. What it doesn’t offer, however, is compatibility with tracks purchased from online music services such as Apple’s iTunes or PlaysForSure compatible varieties including Napster and Yahoo! Music.
