Made of plastic, the K530i feels solid and fits snugly into my piano-player hands. The screen resolution is a low 176 x 220 - most new mid to high-end mobile phones have at least 240 x 320 resolution. Experience instant satisfaction

This sleek clamshell phone is powered with the latest technology to give you lightning-fast data transfer. Why wait for future?

The user can enjoy listening to their favourite radio station on the integrated FM radio with RDS. The RDS features on the radio provides the user with visual information that is given by the radio station & may include breaking news headlines, weather reports & information on the song that is being played on the radio station. The RDS feature is an informative & visual source of information which the user can gain whilst they are listening to the music being played. The built in media player allows the user to play music & watch video on their Sony Ericsson Z710i in different formats. The phone comes complete with an easy access PlayNow™ feature which allows the user to access games & music which are ready to be downloaded onto the Z710i. The user can have fun creating their own ringtones with the help of the MusicDJ™ feature which comes with a selection of beats, rhythms, bass control & instrumental sounds.

Compared with the W710i, the Z710i’s exterior features are both improved and somewhat disappointing at the same time. We’ll start with the bad news first. We dinged the W710i for its bland external display and we’re going to have to do the same with the Z710i. Like its predecessor, the display is very large (1.5 inches) but the monochrome resolution means it doesn’t support photo caller ID. It also won’t act as a viewfinder for self-portraits, but Sony Ericsson redeemed itself this time around by adding a self-portrait mirror to the camera lens just above (there’s still no flash though). You can change the backlighting time, and though the brightness isn’t customizable the display remains visible in direct light.

There are a few extra features that are worth pointing out. The phone handles EDGE connections for fast internet access and has a full screen web browser, so you can realistically use the phone for mobile web access, although obviously this isn’t going to be as easy as browsing the web from a PC. The phone handles MP3 and AAC format ringtones, and has Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow facility for downloading new ringtones. There’s also a polyphonic ringtone composer if you want to try your hand at making your own MIDI ringtones. The phone is quadband for worldwide use, and frequent travellers can make use of flight mode (offline mode). The Z710i is equipped with a full range of personal organiser functions (notes, tasks, alarm clock, business card exchange, calendar, calculator, file manager) and a voice recorder.

w810i.jpg

Dimensions: 100 x 46 x 19 mm

Display: 176×220 pixel and 262,144-colour TFT

Price Range: $199.99 - $339.99

Deluxe Walkman® phone

Mobile phone and music player for audio connoisseurs. Great sound quality, advanced communication features, sleek style.

There’s no hiding the fact that the W810i is an upgrade of the W800i, especially since they share practically the same dimensions and weight. The W810i is black, though, which is a huge improvement if white and orange isn’t your thing. The entire handset including keys is black except for the dedicated Walkman key, a Walkman symbol on the bottom and back, and an orange portrait mirror. The other immediately noticeable design features are the new keypad, navigation button and soft keys.

The W810i is designed to be an outstanding music player phone, and it succeeds. The media player supports both MP3 and AAC formats and audio quality is superb. Mega Bass™ enhances bass frequencies for a better overall music experience. There’s loads of memory for storing music, as the W810i comes bundled with a 512 Mbyte Memory Stick PRO Duo™ - enough to store up to 20 full-length audio CD’s. The memory stick is expandable to 1 Gbyte. Software for ripping CD’s is supplied. In addition to the MP3 player there’s an FM radio with RDS. A quality headset is included in the sales package, and the W810i can also be connected to an external speaker system via an optional cable.

Positioned below the screen, the standard navigational keypad layout was replaced by an interesting three circular-section design. Offering increased convenience when listening to music, the keys serve a dual purpose, allowing users to comfortably navigate through the menu structure, while doubling as music player controls. The 5-Way keypad doubles as Play / Stop, Next and Previous Tracks, and Volume Keys while dedicated Left Selection, Walkman, and Back Keys are positioned on to the left side, and Right Selection, Activity Menu, and Clear Keys on the right.

Dimensions: 98 x 47 x 21 mm

Mobile music sensation

Feel the vibe come alive, whatever your taste in music. Storage for a thousand songs. Fast Web connection to download more.

Managing music is very easy with the CD of PC software supplied. The W850i supports USB mass storage, which means that files can be easily and quickly transferred with a drag and drop operation (USB cable supplied). You can also download music directly to your phone with the Walkman software, and the 3G connection makes this very fast. The W850i also introduces a novel feature called TrackID™. If you hear a song on the radio that you don’t know, you can use TrackID to find the name, artist and album for you - impressive!

The screen measures 2 Inches & provides a clear 262k colour display with a 240 x 320 pixel screen resolution. The screen works as a colourful viewfinder for the camera & video features incorporated in the phone. The user can view their chosen picture wallpapers & animated wallpapers on the screen. The phone comes with a easy to access menu system with useful icon displays. The user can express their personal taste & style with the style up™ covers that are available for the W850i.

Speaking of cameras, 2 megapixels are almost standard on phones these days, and the W850i is no exception. Clearly determined to separate the CyberShot and Walkman brands, Sony have steered clear of a 3.2 megapixel camera on their latest offering. This is no particular disadvantage though because Sony still have the superior experience in camera phones thanks to the fact that Sony were designing cameras long before they bought out Ericsson and started designing phones. Only Nokia have managed to come close to the camera quality offered by a Sony Ericsson phone through their partnership with Carl Zeiss, however can’t offer any of the usability that Sony can. So top marks again.
